                          What to Do When

Lights and Sirens Approach

We all share the responsibility of knowing and practicing proper driving behaviors.  One of the most important "rules of the road" deals with yielding the right of way to emergency vehicles.

What should we do?

bullet Remain calm and move your vehicle appropriately-Don't Panic
bullet General rule is to pull to the right and stop.  On open roads you still need to pull to the shoulder if there is room and stop or at least slow way down.
bullet Do not stop in a curve.
bullet If you cannot go right because of an obstacle then the next best thing is to stop.  The driver of an emergency vehicle can then anticipate where to move.  If you are moving, you are at risk of a collision.
bullet When you are at an intersection with a stop sign or red light and a response vehicle is coming up behind you, stay where you are if you cannot pull to the right.
bullet Check carefully before pulling back on the roadway in case of another response vehicle or other traffic.

Here are things that happen every day that drivers should NOT do.

bullet Stopping in the middle of the lane when there is room to pull to the right
bullet Pulling to the left in the center yellow lane or left turn lane.
bullet Driving through a red light or stop sign when approached from behind.
bullet Making a left turn quickly to a driveway or street.
bullet Racing ahead to get through a green light or turn before the response vehicle gets there.
bullet Disregarding and continuing to travel despite the response vehicle.

Those who drive fire apparatus and ambulances are thoroughly trained  and are taught first to drive with due regard for the safety of others.  The intent is to never force anyone off the road.

North Carolina Move Over Law

The law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of the roadway with its lights flashing. Motorists are required to change lanes away from the emergency vehicle on a multi-lane highway or slow down on a two lane highway and can do so safely. Motorists must slow down while maintaining a safe speed. G.S. 20-157 (f).

A violation will cost you $125.

More information on the
Move Over law is available on the NCDOT website.
