Lights and Sirens Approach
| We all share the responsibility of knowing and practicing proper driving behaviors. One of the most important "rules of the road" deals with yielding the right of way to emergency vehicles.
What should we do?
| Here are things that happen every day that drivers should NOT do.
Those who drive fire apparatus and ambulances are thoroughly trained and are taught first to drive with due regard for the safety of others. The intent is to never force anyone off the road.
North Carolina Move Over Law The law requires motorists to approach cautiously when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of the roadway with its lights flashing. Motorists are required to change lanes away from the emergency vehicle on a multi-lane highway or slow down on a two lane highway and can do so safely. Motorists must slow down while maintaining a safe speed. G.S. 20-157 (f). A violation will cost you $125.
